Part III, Chapter Five: Aurius Is Hopelessly Gone

Part III: Zhian

"Is it more foolish to fall in love, or to pull oneself out of it?" --Zhi poet, c. 890 AE

If there was one thing Aurius had noticed about Takamari over the years, it was that her greetings had grown increasingly amorous with the time she had spent away from her husband. At first, she had nodded. Then she had smiled. Waves, embraces... now, a peck on the cheek. At first he'd thought it was just him, and maybe she was warming up to him, but Lord Takahashu and Lady Shia had mentioned a similar observation. She had been a caged bird for too long and was only now beginning to flex her wings.

"Takamari," he acknowledged her. "Here to pick up the boy?"

She smiled. "I hope I'm not late."

"Sun's still up, isn't it?" Aurius insisted. "You know Lady Shia doesn't mind--besides, it's healthy to take some time for yourself every once in a while."

Really, it was more than every once in a while... but hell, when he first met her, he would have never guessed he'd one day see her so happy. He didn't know what she did when she left the baby with her sister-in-law, but whatever it was, it was doing wonders. She looked almost like a different person; she looked so much younger.

So much like...

Aurius shook his head, then grimaced. "Say, Takamari... have you recieved any--?"

She cut him off with a resigned sigh--just as she had every time he'd asked in the past two years. Was he an idiot for hoping that he might get a different response one of these times? "Aurius, if I'd heard anything, I would have told you."

I would have told you. She would have. And she hadn't. In two years, Maru had never written back; if she hadn't by now, she never would.

And yet, he kept on waiting and hoping. "Am I a complete ass for thinking she might write back one day?"

"Probably, but there are worse sorts of men out there." Takamari paused with a sniff as she fiddled with the gold band around her finger. Aurius wondered why she still wore it; perhaps over the years, her fingers had swollen to the point where she had no choice. "My daughter's a lucky woman to have been loved by somebody like you, I think. I can't say I understand why she wouldn't reply."

"Well, thank you for the sentiment." Maybe it was simply because she'd never felt the same way? It was true that she had never told him otherwise; every time he'd admitted his love for her, she'd hastily changed the subject. Some vain part of him had assumed she'd only been afraid, but the thought seemed petty self-flattery now. If he had any sense at all, he would have walked right up to the maid's pretty daughter and asked if she cared to join him for a drink--it had been damn well long enough.

But he didn't. He was so hopelessly gone. It made even less sense than continually whoring himself out to Kinea--if nothing else, that had at least had some practical benefits. There was nothing practical about Maru, or the way he felt about her. It was painful and humiliating and almost disgusting how obsessed he was, and not practical at all.

But it gave him hope. If nothing else, he had the hope.

  1. Sorry about the wait. This probably wasn't worth it either :(

I actually had this finished last night, but it was past 4 A.M. when it was finally done and I still had to crop the pictures from the next chapter and convert them to JPEGs, and then I figured it would probably need an edit because I was so tired when I wrote it, and then I could hear my dad waking up for work, so... yeah, I'm posting now that I'm awake O_o

But fortunately, I don't work either today or tomorrow, so I should be able to get some stuff done. The next Naroni will be really short, so I'll probably have that one up some time tonight.

  2. Oh, Van! I don't know what I want to do more, cry or hug Aurius. Poor, poor guy. I wish it was possible for him to know the reason why Maru doesn't write back. It's not because she doesn't love you, honey, it's because she thinks you're dead!

And um, did I miss something in Part II, because Takamari having another kid is a huge surprise to me! :)

  3. You didn't miss anything. Takamari got pregnant shortly before she and Aurius fled the country, back when she and Kohashi were having their very brief reconciliation period. It was on Takamari's page on the family tree, but I don't expect everyone to constantly check those--if I did, there would have been a lot of things I would have been preemptively called on by this point ;)

Aurius could use a hug, that's for sure. Not only does Maru think he's dead, but her father is withholding all of her mother's letters, so she has no means of even contacting either of them. Granted, Taka's letters don't mention Aurius at all, because she (rightly) figures that Kohashi will read them :S

  4. Wow. Whoever Takamari's messenger is, he must either be pretty loyal to her or completely unaware of where the letters are coming from. I imagine that Kohashi has questioned the guy once or twice about his wife's whereabouts.

Aurius is looking pretty fine in that tunic. XD

And don't even sweat a late posting, Van. No way I could ever fault anyone for that (let alone someone as prolific as you are).

  5. Takamari's been using various public messengers. Zhian has sort of the equivalent to a medieval postal service :P They aren't legally allowed to say anything about the senders without written consent. Plus she probably has her nephew deal with the messengers for her.

Aurius looks more like his father every day (and his father was quite good-looking) :)

    Thanks Pen :)

  6. *wants to huggle Aurius*

Like Charlotte's reply to Elizabeth(when Lizzy says Mr. Bennett would be a fool to not realize that her sister was in love with him)Pride&Prejudice(man, I love that movie:)"We are all fools in love."

Stick to your guns Aurius. Something tells me Maru hasn't been receiving your letters!:(

I love all A@W updates Van!:D ALL OF THEM!

  7. I must be the only female fast approaching the end of my second decade without having read or seen Pride and Prejudice :S

Maru hasn't recieved a single letter in those two years. We can blame Kohashi for that :(

    Thanks Phoenix :)

  8. Wow. I knew Aurius was a romantic deep down, but I never guessed the depths or how truly hopeless of a romantic he was, Poor dear. Just want to bundle him up. Two years? Oh yeah, he has it bad.
Which has me wondering why she hasn't rec'd those letters.
And I'll agree with the rest, Aurius is certainly dreamy with those dark, mocha eyes.

  9. He's looooong gone, that man :P

Kohashi's been withholding the letters. It came up a few chapters ago, but that was a few weeks ago.

He does look rather nice in that shot. Thanks Karen :)
