Part III, Chapter Two: Maru Chooses a Color

Part III: Zhian

"Pettiness is one of those rare ailments that takes a greater toll on the health of the uninfected." --Tasian journalist, c. 1090 AE

Shiromori Castle, Ayumora, Shiromori

The other three were too excited to pay Maru much notice, but it seemed that even talk of a wedding could not bring relief from Kihara's ever-vigilant judgment. "You know, Maru, most women like to have some say in their own wedding plans."

How shallow her companions were. They didn't even realize that they had been molded to fit a society so rigid and superficial that even the most over-zealous of folk must have had more than a few conscious restraints--or if they did, they didn't seem to mind. Why was she still friends with such people? Perhaps she had grown too numb to even bother telling them otherwise; it seemed the only logical reason at this point.

"They're not my plans," she corrected the other woman as she turned away from the window. "They're my father's plans. You can't honestly believe that I'd be marrying this man if I had any say in it myself, can you?"

Kihara sniffed--she did that a little too often for Maru's taste. "Why not? Yes, he's not much to look at, but he's the heir to a sovereign state, meaning that once both of you ascend to your respective positions, you'll have a small empire."

"But is a small empire worth the cost of a hellish marriage?"

"Oh, marriage isn't quite so bad as you might think," Akiko tried to assure her. "If it's the sex you're worried about, it's not as if it isn't tolerable. It's a bit of a bother, yes, but it's not really any more of a hassle than any other chore."

They thought it was the sex that was the source of her apprehension? She wondered how they might react if she told them she'd actually had sex before--and that she enjoyed it. A few years prior, she would have done exactly that, just to see them squeal, but even that prospect seemed hollow to her now. Somewhere down the road, she had forgotten how to feel. "Akiko, the sex is a detail; it's just that Taios is probably the last man on the planet I'd care to spend my life with."

Miya sighed. "Maru, it isn't as if there's much variation within the male species to begin with; marrying Taios will be pretty much exactly like marrying anyone else."

There were so many things wrong with that comment that she decided to dismiss it as pure madness and deny it a proper reply. "It's the principle of the thing."

"Well, at least choose the color for the wedding, if nothing else," insisted Kihara. "Pink? Sky blue? Perhaps a soft yellow?"

Maru's lip curled inward as an opportunity for a subtle jab came to mind. "All right--black."

Four pairs of blue eyes exchanged confused glances. There was something mildly entertaining about watching them flounder, she had to admit; she might have smiled, if only she could remember how.

It was Senoka who spoke first. "Maru... isn't that a little bleak for a wedding?"

"Bleak?" repeated Kihara, nothing short of scandalized. "It's blasphemous! Maru, black is a color for mourning!"

Maru met each of their gazes in turn, then went back to staring out the window for no particular reason other than the lack of anything better to do. "Precisely."

  1. Hi all. I figure I should probably mention this since it might affect posting rates for the next while. I got a job. I'm only part-time, so it's not like I'll be limited to weekends or anything like that, but there may be a few days where I just can't post. I knew I'd be working this summer, but I hadn't anticipated this huge post-move lull and certainly hadn't intended to follow that with immediate employment.

In any case, I'll still try to update when I can. I'll probably be able to post something most days.

Sorry about the lag, though :(

  2. Huzzah for getting a job Van!! Congrats!! I've said it before but I'll say it again: RL comes before Simming any day o' the week!! ;)

Glad to see A@W though!:) And that proverb at the top struck me at how true it was.

Poor Maru!:( Her stupid father is still trying to marry her off to that loathsome man? He doesn't learn does it? I'm surprised it took so long actually!

And her 'friends' are all idiots. Seriously! How she can stand to be around them is beyond me. She has to feel so lonesome...or not since she's so numb! Black is the proper color for this wedding!

  3. Is having a say in the wedding decorations and color of the dress supposed to be some sort of make-up for the fact that Maru has no say in the guy? Because if it is, it's totally not working.

Though honestly, I like the idea of a black wedding for Maru. Why not make a fuss and make it clear that this is the last thing she wants to do? Societies don't change if the people within them don't speak up!

Ahem. Anyway. I'm surprised she doesn't stab those girls with a spoon. Egads! It's a good thing she's gone numb or else she'd probably go nuts. Poor Maru. :(

And congratulations on the job! And don't worry about the lull. :) Like Phoenix said -- RL before Simming.

  4. Thanks, both of you. It was just a huge shock to me to see that this hadn't been updated in two weeks. Like, I knew I was behind on everything, but I didn't think I was that behind :S

Phoenix: Heheh... I usually come up with the proverbs just before I post the chapters, so some are more fitting than others. This one is one of my better ones, I think :P

Some part of Kohashi's insistence about the marriage may be her punishment. In the last chapter of Part II, she did sort of imply to him that she willingly had sex with Aurius, and of course that's the crime of the century O_o

I suppose on one hand, her friends can't be blamed since they were groomed this way... but on the other hand, Maru's observations are valid. If they realize what's been done to them, they don't really care. Maru's been pretty much alone for the past two years, except maybe her grandparents and Kawa.

Morgaine: I think being involved may be a further part of the punishment, even :S It's so obvious she'd rather a beached anglerfish than this guy that it seems cruel to force her to be involved.

But yeah, if she's going to be involved, she might as well use her power to make subtle rebellions such as the unconventional choice of color. Scandalous!

Yeah, the Maru of old would have chewed them out :( It kind of hurt to write her like this :(

  5. What is wrong with these women? It's like a meeting of the Stepford wives.

I am surprised though that Kohashi has allowed Maru to be unmarried for this long.

And congrats on the new job!

  6. Thanks Pen :)

Yeah, Maru's friends are a little off like that. They need to learn how to think for themselves, that's for sure :S

It is interesting that he waited so long to actually make her get married. That may have actually been another sort of torture tactic, leaving her with all this time to do nothing but think. I imagine Maru is the sort that needs distractions in order to cope.

  7. *Snort* 'Desperate Housewives' of Shiromori. Love the whole 'sex is a chore' bit. Poor Maru, she seems a hollow shell of her former self, a broken heart can do that, well conveyed.
And congrats on the part-time job. Back in Alberta now?

  8. Heheheh :)

Maru's definitely been dealt a heavy blow. Losing (or, thinking one has lost) a loved one is bad enough, but when it was due to another loved one's wishes? That's got to be a difficult thing to get over :(

Thanks Drew :) And yes, I'm back home now.

  9. I am not surprised that Maru is being pushed into this marriage. Her father is most likely being influenced by a great deal of outside pressures plus I believe he feels the need to wield his power.

I do feel so sorry for her though. Yet even in her sorrow, she still has a strength that is smoldering underneath it all. I am hoping she stands up at the last minute and refuses this sham of a marriage. That will throw a monkey wrench in everyone else's ambitions.

    Congrats on the job Van!

  10. Yeah, Kohashi really doesn't have any reason not to pressure her into this marriage. Well, except the whole being a good father reason, but I don't think he sees that as too important :S

There is some of the old Maru under there, I agree. She's like a supposedly dormant volcano at this point--you can't tell just by looking at her how close she is to erupting again.

    Thanks Gayl :)
